We are currently looking for a full-time Staff Accountant to join our team!

Downstreet is seeking an enthusiastic, highly organized, and detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to our mission of providing affordable housing while assisting with the daily functions of the accounting department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handle tenant receivables and security deposits in the accounting system, including scanning checks, preparing deposit tickets, and making bank deposits.
  • Verify that all accounts payable transactions comply with financial policies and procedures. Prepare batches of invoices for data entry, including verifying coding of each invoice by property, grant, fund, project, etc.
  • Perform monthly reconciliations for payable and receivable accounts.
  • Prepare journal entries and reconcile various general ledger accounts, such as cash, accounts receivable, fixed assets, other assets, and accruals, as required.
  • Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statement reports, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
  • Identify and assess opportunities for enhancing processes and implementing automation to streamline operations effectively.
  • Provide assistance in yearly audit preparations, including researching, compiling and verifying needed documents under direction of the Financial Controller.
  • Provide general accounting support and work on special projects as needed.

Experience and Education

  • An undergraduate degree with emphasis in accounting or equivalent and 2+ years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education, employment, and life experience.
  • Experience in non-profit and/or construction and property management accounting is preferred
  • Highly organized with a strong ability to manage priorities and deadlines and ability to manage confidential information.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, active listening skills, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion and social and economic justice.

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working at a computer

Compensation

The annual salary range for this position is $45,000 - $50,000, dependent on experience.
