We are looking for a Temporary Maintenance Assistant to join our team!

Speranza Inn is a trauma-informed, service-integrated hotel that provides temporary housing and support to individuals experiencing homelessness. Operated by Downstreet Housing & Community Development, our mission is to offer safety, dignity, and stability while helping guests connect with longer-term solutions.

We are seeking a Maintenance Assistant to support the upkeep and cleanliness of Speranza Inn’s 42-room facility and grounds. This individual will assist with routine maintenance, janitorial duties, and safety checks to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for guests and staff. This is a temporary position to help cover an increased maintenance workload or provide back-up coverage as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in completing daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance and janitorial checklists
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as:
    • Light plumbing repairs (e.g., fixing leaky faucets, unclogging drains)
    • Changing light bulbs and batteries
    • Replacing smoke detector batteries
    • Basic HVAC filter checks and resets
    • Repairing minor damage to walls, floors, or furniture
  • Conduct room turnovers, including:
    • Light cleaning and sanitation
    • Mattress checks
    • Linen replacement (as needed)
  • Maintain cleanliness in common areas: vacuuming, trash removal, light mopping
  • Support seasonal upkeep: snow shoveling, de-icing walkways, clearing outdoor debris
  • Report larger repair needs to the Director or external vendors
  • Respond to maintenance-related guest issues in a respectful and trauma-informed manner
  • Maintain PPE use and safety protocol per Speranza and Downstreet guidelines
  • Follow documentation and communication expectations, including use of maintenance logs and communication logs
  • Assist with securing and organizing maintenance supplies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in maintenance, custodial work, or hotel facility operations
  • Ability to use basic tools and safely operate cleaning equipment
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Comfort working around vulnerable populations
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practices is a plus (training will be provided)
  • Willingness to wear appropriate PPE and follow health & safety procedures

Physical Requirements

  • This position works inside guest rooms, common areas, and occasionally outdoors
  • Must be able to lift 30+ lbs, climb stairs, and work in a physically active role
  • Schedule flexibility within the week is preferred to support emergent maintenance tasks

Compensation

Salary: $22/hour depending on experience

Schedule: Part-time (20-40 hours/week), temporary (3–6 months)
