Granite City Apartments

4 Humbert Street, Barre, VT 05641

In 2023, Barre City residents said YES to Affordable Housing. In response to the Barre City Council’s goal to use American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to invest in housing, Downstreet applied to receive $250,000 to support the renovation of the Ward 5 School. The result was an outpouring of community support.

Because of the City’s generous donation, Downstreet was able to begin construction on the project at the end of 2023. The long-vacant, historic school will be transformed into beautiful new housing, permanently affordable to our lowest income community members. The nine new homes, including two studios, three one-bedroom, and four two-bedroom apartments, are expected to lease up in mid-2024.

This investment in a dilapidated, old school is preserving Vermont’s rich past while creating a vibrant opportunity for Vermont’s future families.
