Executive Director Update: September 2026

Dear Friends,

Somewhere in Central Vermont this morning, someone made coffee in their own kitchen. A child woke up knowing where they would sleep tonight. Someone stepped outside and greeted a neighbor they’ve known for years.

None of these moments are remarkable, and that’s exactly the point.

Home is where we cook dinner and pay bills, celebrate birthdays, tackle weekend projects, and make plans for the future. Because you support Downstreet, more of our neighbors have a secure place from which to live their daily lives. 

Today, nearly 900 Downstreet apartments are home to more than 1,500 people across central Vermont. Since the Speranza Inn opened, 25 households that once needed emergency shelter have moved into permanent housing. Each year, approximately 600 older adults and people living with disabilities receive support that helps them remain safely in their homes and connected to their communities. And over the next 18 months, we expect to add 76 new, permanently affordable apartments in three central Vermont communities. 

Behind those numbers are things that are harder to count: a child staying in the same school, a neighbor remaining in the community they know, a family with a little more room to breathe.
