A letter from our Executive Director

Dear Community,
As summer arrives in Vermont, I’ve been reflecting on just how much we’ve accomplished together, and how deeply grateful I am for the people who make this work possible. The past few months at Downstreet have been full of activity, progress, and inspiration. In the midst of both exciting growth and the challenges that come with change, I’m continually reminded of the resilience, generosity, and spirit of our community.
In April, I had the chance to represent Downstreet at the annual NeighborWorks Conference in Washington, D.C., where I heard Senator Welch give a powerful keynote and met with all of Vermont’s congressional delegation. Their commitment to affordable housing was clear and heartfelt, and it means so much to know we have strong champions in our corner, working hard to preserve the funding and policies that support the work we do every day.
Back home, we’ve had some real moments to celebrate. At our 38th Annual Meeting last month, held at the historic Old Labor Hall in Barre, we shared a few of the big milestones we’ve reached this spring, and you can read about them below. It’s a lot to be proud of—and we’re not slowing down.
At the same time, we know that the road ahead may not be easy. Uncertainty around federal housing funds has many of you wondering how it might affect our work. So let me reassure you:
We’re in a strong position. We’re planning ahead, staying nimble, and making careful choices to protect our mission and the people we serve. We’re staying focused, clear-eyed, and deeply committed.
At our core, Downstreet exists to make sure everyone in Central Vermont has a safe, affordable place to call home and the support to thrive once they’re there. As our Board Chair Kevin Ellis often says, we don’t just care deeply about this work—we’re really good at it. And we’re just getting started.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Whether you give your time, your voice, or your resources, you help make this work possible. We’re so lucky to be doing it with you, and even luckier to live in a community that always shows up when it matters most.
With gratitude,
Angie Harbin
Executive Director
