Executive Director Update: April 2026

Dear Friends,

This spring, Downstreet marked an important transition as Kevin Ellis stepped down from our Board of Trustees after a decade of service, including four years as chair.

Kevin’s leadership has helped shape not only the direction of our work, but how we think about it. He has consistently challenged us to ask whether our systems are truly serving the people they are meant to serve—and to push beyond easy answers in pursuit of something better. His commitment to public service, community, and the idea that our work should expand opportunity has left a lasting mark on Downstreet.

In recognition of his contributions, we are honored to name our newest development in Montpelier Ellis Commons.

The name reflects more than Kevin’s leadership. It speaks to an idea he has helped reinforce throughout his time with Downstreet: that housing is part of the commons—the shared foundation of a community that depends on collective care and responsibility. Ellis Commons will bring new life to a historic property while creating permanently affordable homes in the heart of Montpelier.

We are deeply grateful for Kevin’s years of service and for the standard of thoughtfulness, curiosity, and commitment he has set. His impact will continue to be felt in the homes we create and the communities we strengthen.
