Downstreet Awarded $8,023,225 from Vermont Housing and Conservation Board to Purchase and Renovate Quality Inn in Barre City

Downstreet Housing & Community Development is pleased to announce that the organization has been awarded $8,023,225 to purchase and renovate the Quality Inn in Barre City. This full funding from the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board (VHCB) will enable Downstreet to purchase, renovate, and operate the site as a hotel, providing crucial shelter and support services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

At a recent meeting on June 21, VHCB recognized the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to address homelessness in Vermont. Downstreet will operate the site, offering not only safe and secure homes but also access to essential services and supportive programs.

"We are grateful for the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board's support and commitment to addressing homelessness," said Angie Harbin, Executive Director of Downstreet Housing & Community Development. "This funding allows us to move forward with our vision of transforming the Quality Inn into a supportive environment where individuals and families experiencing homelessness can find refuge and the necessary resources to secure more permanent housing options."

"Our Board is proud to support this important project," said VHCB Executive Director Gus Seelig. "Our friends at the Agency of Human Services have indicated that this development is of highest priority in meeting the need for supportive housing in Washington County. We congratulate Downstreet for taking steps to address the crucial needs of those experiencing homelessness -- this comprehensive approach that integrates adequate shelter, supportive services, and affordable housing solutions is essential for addressing the root causes of homelessness and preventing it in the future.”
