Rental FAQ

How do I pay my rent?

There are three ways to pay your rent:
1. NEW!! You can now pay your rent online through RentTrack. You will need to register before you can login and pay online, but it is a quick and easy process.

2. You can stop in at our office at 22 Keith Ave. in Barre (corner of Summer St. and Keith Ave.) to drop off a check in person.

3. You can mail your rent payment to:

How Do I Apply for an Apartment?

The first step is to download our rental application. After you have downloaded the application you may print it, fill it out by hand, and mail or deliver to our office at 22 Keith Ave., Suite 100, Barre, VT 05641.

Or you can use the latest version of Adobe Reader to fill in the application and either print it out or submit it electronically by clicking the “Submit Form” button at the top of the page.

Income limits may vary from apartment to apartment for further details and income limits, please contact the property manager listed with the property.

What apartments are available right now?

Our available apartments can change very quickly, and many of our buildings have a waiting list. We recommend that you complete an application and indicate all of the locations in which you are interested so that we can discuss the availabilities once your application has been approved. If no units are available upon approval of your rental application you may request to be put on our waiting list.

What is included in the rent?

Rent includes heat, hot water, trash/snow removal and 24 hour emergency maintenance at all properties. Cabot Commons, Evergreen Place, Good Neighbors, Stimson & Graves and the elderly/disabled units at Mad River Meadows also include electricity.

Do you accept Section 8?

Yes. Applicants with a voucher must still meet all other resident qualifications.

Do you provide immediate/emergency housing?

No, we do not. If you are in need of immediate/emergency shelter, please contact Capstone Community Action. They partner with Good Samaritan Haven to provide temporary and emergency housing. After-hours please call 2-1-1 if you are in need of shelter.

How long will it take to process my application?

Applications are processed in the order they are received, by date and time. You will be notified of Downstreet’s decision within 14 business days of receipt of your application. If there is a vacancy, you will be notified that your application is being processed for a current vacancy. If there are no vacancies, your name will be added to our waitlist.

*Downstreet collects third party verifications immediately; therefore the processing time may vary and in some cases may take longer if verifications are not returned promptly.

Can I appeal the decision if my application is denied?

Yes. An Appeal Letter must be submitted to the Appeals Committee in writing within ten calendar days of receipt of the denial. The letter allows the applicant an opportunity to present any information they believe will support the contention that their application should be accepted.

Does Downstreet allow pets in rental units?

Downstreet allows pets in our elderly properties, but not in our family properties. Detailed pet policies vary amongst our communities.

Can you help me if I was denied an apartment based on my financial situation?

Yes! Our HomeOwnership Center has a Smart Start Workshop for anyone who would like to learn about budgeting, credit repair, and improving their overall financial fitness. Visit this page for details and to enroll.
