After a year’s worth of preparation to submit our Green Designation application to NeighborWorks America, Downstreet learned that we have been granted the NeighborWorks Green Organization Designation. This accomplishment is by no means the end of an effort, as NeighborWorks requires measures to ensure continuation of the green measures that are already in place, as well as the ongoing task of improving and expanding our environmentally sustainable practices.
Downstreet has always been committed to green practices, but this designation formalized our efforts and highlighted the areas where we needed to improve our work in this area. In that spirit, we have begun using WegoWise utility tracker software to monitor usage at all of the properties in our profile, allowing us to see where we are most efficient and where we need to take measures to increase energy efficiency. We also introduced a composting program at River Station Apartments in Montpelier, and introduced composting at our headquarters office in Barre. These are just some of the new developments that we added to the list of practices that were already in place, such as reusable plates, bowls, cups and cutlery in our staff lunchroom, teleconferencing for out-of-town meetings, paper recycling and using green cleaning products, to name a few.
Moving forward, Downstreet will continue to look for ways to improve our efforts in order to promote and practice environmentally friendly and sustainable practices.
