2017 Barre City Neighborhood Survey

One way in which Downstreet has tried to understand the need for community development was through participation in NeighborWorks’ Community Impact Measures survey, which took place during the summer of 2013. This survey queried 200 randomly selected households within a 81-block portion of downtown Barre City, right where Downstreet is located.

Now, in 2017, we are conducting the same survey in the same area to see what has changed for the residents of this Barre City Neighborhood.

This project also includes the observation of block and parcel conditions throughout the 85-block radius. Downstreet staff will be conducting these observations throughout the summer, so if residents notice some inquisitive people walking up and down the blocks in this area, making notes, rest assured they are simply recording information for the Community Impact Measures project.

What is the Barre City Neighborhood Survey?

During the spring and summer of 2013 Downstreet conducted phase one of the Community Impact Measures project, which involved surveying approximately 200 randomly selected residences within an 81-block radius in downtown Barre City about their experience in their neighborhoods. Now, four years later, Downstreet is conducting the same survey in the same area in order to measure the changes residents have noticed in their neighborhoods since 2013.

Questions on the survey relate to residents’ feelings about safety and security, their involvement in the community, and how they feel their neighborhood has changed in recent years.

Who is surveyed and where?

Barre City residents within an 81-block radius in downtown Barre City between Brook St. and East St., N. Main St. and Seminary/Tremont St. will be asked to complete the survey. Downstreet’s goal is to get at least 200 households to participate, although we encourage all residents to complete a survey!

Why is Downstreet doing this?

Downstreet is committed to making positive change in neighborhoods throughout our service area, and this survey helps us to get an idea of how we’re doing in downtown Barre. The only way to know for sure is to ask residents who experience the neighborhood every day.

How can residents participate?

Residents in the neighborhood we are targeting for survey responses (an 81-block radius in downtown Barre City between Brook St. and East St., N. Main St. and Seminary/Tremont St.) can expect Downstreet staff to be in their area during the morning of Thursday, May 11th. Staff will be distributing information about how to complete the survey. Residents can take the survey online, call Downstreet to take the survey over the phone, or come into our office to pick up a paper copy to complete and return.

Why should residents participate?

Everyone who completes the survey will be entered into a drawing to win one of three (3) $300 gift cards. But the best reason for residents to participate is to share their experience with Downstreet so that we can better understand resident perceptions and experiences about living in downtown Barre and the impact we can potentially have upon those perceptions and experiences.

If you have something you’d like to share, please post here. If a response is desired, please indicate that in your message and we will reply as soon as we are able. If you are looking for other ways to become involved with Downstreet in working toward stronger community engagement, please fill out this form and ask for ways you can help.
